UPDATE - August 2007

Please see below an update of the X Umpires Support Program.

Alan Cole


Alan Cole

Alan is going along pretty well, apart from a shortness of breath he is feeling good.  He played 18 holes at Yarrawonga recently (albeit in a cart) partnering Frank Gagliardi where they were beaten on the last hole.












Peter Sheales

Peter is going well after his hip replacement.  He is recovering at home and should be out and about in the near future.












Brian Philp

Former member Brian Philp recently underwent major surgery to have a kidney removed.  He is recovering at home.













Albert Borlase

Life Member Albert Borlase is doing it a bit tough at the moment as a result of a few medical problems.  He is in good spirits though.  Program Officer Don Cooke has made contact with Albert and will keep us up to date on how he is going.













Ian Sonneman

Life Member Ian Sonneman has MS and is in a wheelchair.  He was able to attend our Appreciation Dinner in 2005 and is aiming to get to out Annual Dinner this year.  Don Cooke has made contact and will keep us informed.










Don Cooke joins team

We are delighted to announce that Don Cooke has volunteered to join our program as a Program Officer.

He joins Ron Bailey on our team and this will enable us to increase our coverage.

Don has been involved in umpiring for 31 years including 5 years on the VFL List 1980-1984.  He joined as an Associate Member in 2006.

He has worked in Human Resources Management for 25 years, is a Justice of the Peace, a volunteer with the "Make a Wish Foundation", plays the drums in a band, plays Super Rules Footy, has interests in race horses and grey hounds, and competes in triathlons.  Now he has joined our Program.

We welcome Don to the team and look forward to working with him.





Jim Barwick

AFLUA stalwart , Jim Barwick, whose career spanned 27 years 1946 – 1972 as field and later a goal umpire, is doing pretty well.  Now 85, Jim can't get out much but recently X Umpires Support Program Officer Ron Bailey got together with Jim and J R Gray for lunch and few beers.










Norm Chitts

Life Member Norm Chitts is struggling a bit at present,

He has some kidney issues and will have to undergo dialysis in the near future.
